About This Project
Ties That Bind focuses on three history themes that are aligned with the Colorado Content Standards in History. Within each theme, pivotal events, people, documents, legislation and judicial cases are explored. During the first year teachers will concentrate on the theme of "Liberty and Equality." The political and social evolution of these ideas from the 18th through the 20th centuries start with the John Peter Zenger trial and continue through the Patriot Act. In year two, teachers will study the evolution of America's participation in the wider world beginning with the French and Indian War and continuing through containment, détente and globalization. In year three, the theme will be quot;Technology -- The ouble-Edged Sword." Beginning with the compass and the moveable sail teachers will explore the intended and unintended consequences of the development and implementation of technology in US history. Sample technologies to be addressed are the Pennsylvania Rifle, Cotton Gin, Steam Engine, Conestoga Wagon, macadam Road, Erie Canal, Barbed Wire, Vacuum Cleaners, Jeeps, Computers and iPods.
Ties That Bind approaches history as a "whodunit" and utilizes primary sources as the key to uncovering the past. As historians follow clues, uncover evidence and discover motives history comes alive and students become more involved in their own education. Using primary sources as the base for instruction, Ties That Bind will show teachers how to guide their students through all steps of the historical investigation process, how to include local history to demonstrate the national historical narrative, and how to engage students in understanding and appreciating America's colorful and eventful past.
Each year teachers will combine their efforts to produce a source book that contains primary sources that illustrate the themes of national history through local examples. Guided questions will walk students through each primary source. Lesson plans will incorporate historical thinking and utilize internet resources and the latest pedagogical techniques.
Through its professional development approaches, Ties That Bind intends to improve teachers' content knowledge in US history and pedagogical approaches in presenting history lessons. Through these methods, Ties That Bind intends to improve all students' interest in and appreciation for US history resulting ultimately in improved performance and retention of this important and necessary discipline.
